Estate Sale

Folks down the street are moving

back to their hometown,

back to the dreams

of decades ago,

to reassess, accept, and continue

in an assisted living facility,

shedding years of accumulation

like so many skins.

Time ticks, and memory motes

dance in a whirlwind

of passing moments.

The sellers joke with buyers,

about sales to come—

if we’re all lucky.

For now,

this lounge chair,

snagged for a fiver,

under a grey sky

and cool breeze,

is the best place

for good fortune,

quiet moments,

and illusions of eternity.
