Elementals I

 

 

 

 

He’s a fire inside her waterfall.

She picks leaves from his hair

with the precision of sticks, and

together they scoop stardust.

 

They don’t knock knees,

because, the spin of their molecules know. 

They know it all.

Coolness and fever coexist.

 

Free-range rivers skip and thunder claps

right between the mountain’s dust.

Rain bows to the Earth, and

berries ripen, just as a hand is to hold.

 

 

 

Lindsay Rice has been writing poetry since middle school and won a National Scholastic Writing Award. She studied poetry and fiction at The University of Iowa and draws inspiration from her international travels. Currently, she lives in her home town of Prairie Village, Kansas where she tutors middle school and high school students in academic and creative writing. She is also working on her first novel.
