The Duende

 (after Lorca)

Its smoldering eyes

are the dark red plums

of a still life,

alluringly overripe, precipitate

in their rendezvous with death.

Its wings shine like negatives

in a darkroom, ever devoid

of development, swishing

in the chemicals of blackness.

It languishes in the dungeon

of the grave to clank the terrible

syllables of chains.
