I'm a Poet Even If You Don't Read My Poetry

for Yusef Komunyakaa

Even if you don’t see me

as a poet, I’m able to enter

as many churches as you are.

I know you have a job

that I am more qualified for,

that I’ve traveled north, south,

east, west to dig the ditches

and wash the dishes of God,

but the poems exist even if

I die in some year of mist,

if I fall into some hole of crime,

if I end up hid under the rocks

of nothingness.  I still have this

poem that I wrote; I have these

clothes, this lamp, this pen,

this time, and there is

a possibility my love will fall

into somebody else’s mind.
