Giving Birth in my Dream

I was silent – spoke not at all

to those white figures attending me

even to you when you arrived.

Silent within too I thought little

but I noticed my gladness

when you came and spoke

what was needed.

What child is this child

who almost comes to me?

The morning followed, quiet too –

a house to order, birds to feed

so that woodpecker will come back

and we can see his red head

and his misnamed gray belly.

Sometimes what we give birth to arrives softly

to our uncomprehending selves.
